Welcome to The Marterella Winery website!!!

Our business began back in December 2000- when we purchased this pretty rolling property in the heart of Fauquier County.  The site location is ideal for growing grapes due to the many ideal factors of slope, elevation, sun aspect, great soils, and the protection of Wild Cat Mountain ridge on the North side.

Our current winery

The first year was  spent preparing our vineyard and winery site- putting in a road, drilling a well, getting essential power connections and planting the first 500 vines- Cabernet Franc! AND we started humble. We used our storage shed for the first 4 years to house all the vineyard equipment.

In the Spring of 2002 – we  continued our vineyarddevelopment and planted Vidal Blanc and Chambourcin and expanded our Cabernet Franc plantings.  The vineyard was named Falcon Glen Vineyard LLC… after the street and a formal LLC was established in June of 2002.

Katherine pruning  Merlot in Winter 2011

In the Fall of 2002 Katherine  studied in France the month of November touring Bordeaux and Burgundy learning the art of classic viticulture and wine making. On this trip Katherine estabished long term relationships with Dr.Bruce Zoecklin, Dr. Tony Wolf, and Professor Pascal Durand of the University of Burgundy.

For the next three years, Katherine concentrated on the vineyard  cultivating it’s growth and health. The summer of 2005 the construction of the present winery building began and was completed the summer of 2006.  We opened our tasting room on October 8, 2006.
